Question Your Surroundings

For Sunday evening (by 9:30), please identify and describe a moment of knowledge, either from a class or outside the (directly) academic realm. Next, extract and write a knowledge question based on the moment you've shared. Please couch your KQ in the language of TOK.

  1. In attempting to speak only Spanish with my friend I observed how hard it could be to express concepts in Spanish I could easily express in English. More interestingly, I noticed how the same concept worked in reverse, i.e. I found some things easier to express in Spanish than English, even though I speak English far better than I speak Spanish.
Which made me wonder, to what extent is the knowledge we gain through other ways of knowing limited in its expression to others when we use the imperfect way of knowing of language to convey it?

  4. Moment of Knowledge: When I read the same poem and book in both English and Chinese, even though the translation is really accurate and specific, they still feel different.

  5. Moment of Knowledge: In math class, Ms. L-T taught us a way to find t in the functions Y=250x(0.998)^t and Y=125 by graphing. I found this method easier and simple and used it continuously.

Knowledge Question: To what extent does visual explanation impact how mathematical knowledge is attained?

  6. Moment of Knowledge: While playing Miss Hall's yesterday, I learned that many of Lisa’s coaching decisions are based on her intuition. At first they seem illogical and rash, but the decision later proves to be the correct one.

Second Order Claim: Intuitive knowledge is often difficult to communicate.
Knowledge Question: How communicable is intuitive knowledge?

  7. Moment of Knowledge: When I tried to learn a new hair style, I read an instruction written in sentences but it didn't make any sense. However when I watched a tutorial without any language on You Tube, it was much easier to understand.

  8. I asked different people how they learn vocabularies in a language that is not their first language, and got different answers. Some people said that they need to listen to the words, some people said that they need to see the word, some people said that they need to no the meaning of the word in order to learn it...
Are different ways of knowing more effective for different people?

  11. I was talking to a person and realized that they seemed to be annoyed. I noticed this because of various areas of knowledge that allowed me to interpret what this person was feeling.

  14. I was stuggling on a math problem and I realized that even though I understood this topic when I previously learned it, I did not understand it this weekend.

Is it possible to learn the same thing more than once because the next time(s) we learn it, we are using an unequal distribution of areas of knowledge?

  15. Moment of Knowledge:
When I was working at home over the weekend, I was doing things I had not done for five weeks. While I’m at home over the summer, all I do is yard work. After three months, it becomes mundane and tedious and I can not wait to be back at school. Yet after five weeks of school, mundane chores become interesting and enjoyable again. This makes me wonder about how we decide if we enjoy something or not. Perhaps there is just too much of it.

    Knowledge Questions:
In what way does our perception of the nature of something we view vary our interpretation of actions we must take?
